What is hydramnios?

Hydramnios, also known as polyhydramnios, is characterized by an excessive accumulation of amniotic fluid surrounding the fetus during pregnancy. This condition can occur due to a variety of reasons including fetal anomalies, maternal diabetes, or other complications that can lead to increased production or decreased absorption of the fluid. An adequate amount of amniotic fluid is essential for normal fetal development, as it facilitates movement, supports lung development, and protects the fetus.
